Celebrating Physical Therapy Month: The Heart of Wound and Lymphedema Care
As Physical Therapy Month unfolds, it’s the perfect time to honor a group of healthcare professionals whose expertise profoundly impacts patient recovery and quality of life. At The Frank & Lizzie Show, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible training, innovative modalities, and compassionate care that PTs bring to wound and lymphedema management.
Physical therapists undergo rigorous education and clinical training to master techniques that restore mobility, reduce pain, and promote healing. In wound and lymphedema care, their skill set includes modalities such as Ultrasound, Electrical Stimulation (E-Stim), Ultrasonic MIST Debridement, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), Total Contact Casting, and comprehensive gait assessments. These tools, combined with hands-on expertise, allow PTs to tailor treatments that optimize healing and improve patients’ daily function.
My personal journey started when I was in clinical rotations for my nurse practitioner degree. I called a specialized wound clinic featuring a passionate team of vascular surgeons, PTs, and PTAs dedicated to holistic patient care. I was drawn to the clinic because it offered advanced therapies, including lymphedema treatment, debridement, and the full spectrum of wound care modalities.

Attending my first Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) conference was a milestone. I presented a poster on SonicOne, an ultrasonic debridement tool, and was fortunate to dine at the poster faculty event where I met Frank Aviles, also a PT and wound care educator. “Frank The Tank” and I connected immediately over our shared passion for teaching and making wound care accessible and fun. This friendship was the foundation of The Frank & Lizzie Show, which debuted in 2020 and continues to grow as a resource for the wound care community.
This Physical Therapy Month, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all physical therapists for their crucial role in wound and lymphedema care. Your dedication not only heals wounds but also restores hope and dignity to patients. Special thanks to those who mentor, educate, and inspire emerging clinicians; your impact lasts a lifetime.

Join us in recognizing the vital contributions of physical therapists in wound and lymphedema care. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, patient, or advocate, take a moment this month to learn more about PT services, support continuing education for therapists, or share a story of how PT has made a difference in your life or community. Together, we can elevate the appreciation and understanding of this incredible profession.
